CARDIFF, WALES - SEPTEMBER 12, 2024 – In a heartfelt display of community engagement, Alcumus SafeContractor employees teamed up with the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) for the annual "Race Around Cardiff." This powerful initiative aimed to raise awareness about the challenges faced by blind and partially sighted people in navigating urban environments.
RNIB Cymru, Wales' largest sight loss charity, supports 112,000 blind and partially sighted individuals and their families. The organisation enhances lives, promotes independence, and collaborates with various sectors to provide vital services and information. They advocate for social change and improved services to combat inequalities, ensuring everyone can lead independent and inclusive lives.
Ansley Workman, Director, RNIB said: “We’re thrilled that Alcumus staff used their volunteering day to find out more about the real challenges blind and partially sighted people face getting around our streets safely. Things like navigating around obstacles and being able to cross roads can pose a daily risk to many people with sight loss.
Their contributions will help us campaign for change – to make society more accessible and inclusive so that blind and partially sighted people can safely make the journeys. Alcumus staff also had the chance to learn about sight loss and practical advice on how they can play a part in breaking down barriers for blind and partially sighted people.”
As part of the company's commitment to corporate social responsibility, Alcumus SafeContractor staff used their giving days to partner with RNIB employees and volunteers for a guided walk through the heart of Cardiff. The event offered participants a unique opportunity to experience firsthand the daily obstacles encountered by those who are blind and partially sighted.
Nathan Hopkins, Global Head of Talent & Recruitment, Alcumus. said: “At Alcumus, we value giving back through our Giving Day initiative, which offers an additional paid day off for employees to make a meaningful impact. This can involve volunteering, sharing expertise, or collaborating on local projects. By working together, we aim to drive positive change and contribute to a sustainable future.”
Participants gained a deeper understanding of the importance of inclusive urban design, encountering various accessibility challenges, such as navigating pedestrian crossings, public transportation, and busy shopping areas.
By participating in the "Race Around Cardiff" event, Alcumus SafeContractor employees not only gained valuable insights but also contributed to a vital cause. The partnership between Alcumus SafeContractor and RNIB demonstrates the positive impact achievable when businesses and charitable organisations collaborate on important social issues.
Gemma Lynch, SVP Global Strategic Accounts, Alcumus SafeContractor shared: “I felt privileged to spend time today with our client RNIB and their incredible blind and partially sighted volunteers. The day was thought-provoking, offering insight into the challenges faced by those with sight loss. It made me realise how many everyday conveniences I take for granted, such as the fact that only 36% of blind and partially sighted people use the internet, highlighting a significant digital divide. Additionally, spontaneous travel is often hindered by unreliable public transport.
As we walked through the city, we gathered valuable feedback on the obstacles people with sight loss encounter in daily life. A special shout-out to the guide dogs accompanying us—they truly transform the lives of those they assist and do an amazing job.”
Alcumus SafeContractor is committed to continuing its support for initiatives that promote inclusivity and awareness within the community, striving to make a lasting impact on creating a more accessible world.
